Choosing the right format
Decide whether the purpose is a personal understanding or a document with legal consequences, such as a cohabitation or property arrangement. These purposes require different wording and review. All parties should take part voluntarily and understand what is being recorded.

- Shared purpose and each person’s agreed responsibilities
- Communication, boundaries and practical household arrangements
- Review date and how changes will be discussed
How to use the template
- Discuss expectations together and record only points both people understand.
- Use clear, respectful language rather than penalties or coercive terms.
- Seek jurisdiction-specific legal advice for money, property or other legal obligations.
Worked example
A personal understanding might agree to review shared expenses monthly and discuss changes before making commitments. It should not be presented as a guarantee of relationship success.
