A community petition presents a request supported by named signatories. The samples below can help organize an issue and collect support. A community signature petition is different from a formal court petition, which must follow the relevant court’s procedures.

Choosing the right format
Choose a signature sheet for gathering support or a letter-style layout for presenting the request. Identify the recipient with authority to consider it. A template makes the request clearer but does not guarantee the requested outcome.
Details to include
- Specific issue and requested action
- Recipient, principal contact and date
- Appropriate signatory names, signatures and other required details
How to use the template
- Write a short factual explanation of the problem.
- Explain what signatories are supporting before collecting information.
- Submit through the recipient’s accepted process and keep a copy.
Worked example
A neighborhood petition might request a review of pedestrian safety at a named crossing. Keep the request specific and do not publish private signatory details unnecessarily.
